One could claim that our history began 35 million years ago, when ancient seas covered what is today the Mainz region. One could also let the story begin 200 years ago, when our family settled on the Red Slope and started to cultivate wine. Or, finally, one could mark the beginning of our wine estate at my marriage in 2006 to Hans-Oliver Spanier of the Battenfeld-Spanier estate. In spite of prehistoric waters and primeval soils and long family tradition, recent years have witnessed radical progress: A metamorphosis.
Ecological cultivation, biodynamic elements, natural fermentation, long yeast contact, and large wooden barrels are only a few indicators of our transformation. By now we belong to the best and most acknowledged wine estates in Germany, with four Gault-Millau grapes and countless other prizes and awards (including 100 Best List in
Handelsblatt/Vinum ). All recognition is gratifying, but much more important is that we are able to identify ourselves and our soil in our wines.
With our renovations, we have tried to prove that authentic natural products and a demanding modern civilization are readily compatible. To achieve this, in 2007 we added a modern cubic structure to our traditional estate buildings. It combines our vision of aspiration, tradition, and progress in a contemporary manner. On the one hand, bold colors dominate the cozy, relaxing atmosphere of our lounge and
Vinothek . On the other hand, clear design language reflects our own aspirations in wine: noble and reserved, steering one to the contents, which must convince on their own.

Of course, some things remain constant. For generations, women have been in charge at Kühling-Gillot. That remains unchanged today. In 2002 I, Carolin Spanier-Gillot, took over the reins of the operation. I am an oenologist, mother of two, business woman, and passionate friend of nature
. Above all, I enjoy entertaining guests. Visitors to our wine estate should feel contented, and I hope that we have created the appropriate ambience for this.
Life is fast-paced and fleeting, leaving little time for gradual maturing. At our estate, we are determined to not inhibit progress, but we also want to counter the feeling of lost time. Of course, that matters most with our wines, which we mature slowly and treat to expansive cask aging. This process does not mean renunciation of modern technology or conveniences; rather it is more about sensual richness and exceptional wine, which can transport such opulence.
